Five canal-side walks with scenic views in Greater Manchester

On a sunny spring day, Greater Manchester’s canals really come into their own. With water glistening in the sun and trees blooming with blossoms, you can’t beat a canalside walk at this time of year.

There are no challenging inclines or complicated routes to worry about either, so just follow the towpath and soak up the views. From urban routes which take you through the heart of the city, to idyllic moorland stretches, there’s a variety of waterside walks to do across the region.

Now that brighter weather is here we’ve rounded up some of the best canalside walks below. If you’re looking for more inspiration when it comes to getting outside and enjoying the sunshine, then check out these parks.

Marple Locks, Stockport

Surrounded by beautiful countryside and lush greenery, Marple Locks is a beautifully scenic walk to do. Extending over the course of one mile, it boasts an impressive flight of 16 working locks - one of the steepest flights in Britain. A highlight worth checking out is Marple Aqueduct, the highest canal aqueduct in England, with beautiful stone archways.

Bridgewater Way, Stretford

Nearly 20km of the Bridgewater Canal lies within Trafford and you can pick up a section of the walk in Stretford, following the canal south to Sale. Starting from the Stretford Metrolink stop, the towpath takes you past residential areas and green spaces, including Stretford Ees, Priory Gardens and Walton Park in Sale.

Castlefield Basin, Manchester

With its imposing bridges Castlefield Basin harks back to Manchester’s industrial heritage. Follow the canal east and you’ll see the city from a different perspective, or head west watch as the skyline opens up towards Salford. Alternatively ditch the walk altogether and enjoy a drink at the Wharf instead.

Uppermill to Diggle, Oldham

For a rural canalside walk follow the Huddersfield Narrow Canal north from Uppermill to Diggle. It’s a stunning stretch of canal regularly crossed by pretty bridges and with incredible views of Saddleworth Moor. A visit to Grandpa Greene’s Luxury Ice Cream beside the canal is a must.

Worsley, Salford

Can’t decide between a canalside walk and a wander around a village? Well Worsley can offer you both. Located on the Bridgewater Canal, this idyllic village features beautiful mock Tudor buildings, pretty greens and areas of woodland. Take a relaxing stroll along the waterside and soak up the village scenery.
