Fitbit is recalling 1.7 million of its Ionic smartwatches after a potential safety issue was identified.
The electronics and fitness company issued the alert after dozens of consumers reported burn injuries after the watch's battery overheated.
It announced on Wednesday that the smartwatches, which were produced from 2017 until 2020, we being voluntarily recalled.
Some one million devices are being recalled in the US, with 700,000 being recalled internationally.
The battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard, the company said.
Fitbit said: "The health and safety of Fitbit users is our highest priority. We are taking this action out of an abundance of caution for our users. We will offer a refund to Fitbit Ionic customers.
"This voluntary recall is specific to Fitbit Ionic devices. It does not impact any other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers.
"If you own a Fitbit Ionic, please stop using your device."
People seeking a refund can also avail of a 40% discount on certain Fitbit devices, bands, and services, for a limited time.
In the US, Fitbit received 115 reports of the battery overheating, with 78 reports of burn injuries.
These included two reports of third-degree burns and four claims of second-degree burns.
There were 40 reports of burn injuries internationally.
However, it is not known whether any Irish consumers were impacted by the safety issues.
Fitbit was acquired by Google for $2.1 billion (€1.8 billion) last year.
