Fitbit issues urgent product recall after more than 100 burnt by Ionic smartwatches

Fitbit has issued an urgent recall of all of its Ionic smartwatches amid fears that they could overheat and cause burns to wearers.

According to an announcement made by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 100 people have reported being burnt by the watch after its battery overheated.

The company has sold about one million of the model in the US and nearly 700,000 internationally - with many users wearing the watch overnight to track their sleeping.

Two of the people of those burnt by their Fitbit watch suffered third-degree burns, while four others reported less severe second-degree burns.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has urged everyone with an Ionic FitBit smartwatch to stop using their device immediately and contact FitBit to return the product.

Owners of the device will be sent pre-paid packaging to return the device and receive a refund - Fitbit will also provide a code for a discount on certain new devices to anyone who has to return their watch as a result of the product recall.

The Ionic smartwatches - which were manufactured between 2017 and 2020 - feature a 3.5cm colour LCD screen and a polyurethane band available in several colours, tracks the wearer’s activity, heart rate and sleep.
