Fisherman left astonished after accidentally hooking giant 10ft long shark

This is the astonishing moment an angler is left bewildered after hooking a massive 10ft long shark.

Fishing fanatic Hakan Karakas was angling in the Dardanelles Strait, in north-western Turkey, when he left his line unattended as it hung over the side of his boat.

But when Hakan returned to find his rod heavily bent, he started pulling on it and soon realised he had hooked an enormous shark.

Despite struggling with the mighty beast, he managed to whip out his mobile phone and record the remarkable moment.

After spending a few moments filming the massive shark as it thrashed around in the water, he unhooked it and allowed it to swim away.

Hakan's video quickly did the rounds, with experts identifying the species as a bluntnose sixgill shark.

It is categorised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as 'near threatened', meaning that it may be vulnerable to endangerment in the near future.

Dr Cahide Cigdem Yigin of Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University told local media: "This is a species that migrates between seas and also seasonally migrates to the shallows.

"It exists in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Marmara and Aegean Seas in our country. But they are a very rare species."

Bluntnose sixgill sharks can grow up to 20 feet long. But despite their terrifying size, they are said to pose no threat to humans.

Dr Yigin said: "They are rare species to meet humans because they are usually found in deep and dark waters."
