Fish and chip shop's windows smashed after owner celebrated Queen's death

The owner of a fish and chip shop in Scotland who caused outrage by celebrating the death of the Queen has had the windows of her business smashed.

Jaki Pickett, who runs Jaki's Fish and Chip Shop in Muir of Ord, in the Highlands, posted a video of herself on the shop's Facebook page popping a bottle of champagne after news of the Queen's death broke last week.

Pictures showed her holding up a chalkboard that read "Lizard Liz Dead and London Bridge has fallen." It caused a huge online backlash and the post has since been deleted.

After the footage quickly spread on Facebook, a crowd of 150 outraged residents descended on the shop last week, hurling eggs and sprayed the windows with ketchup, forcing the business to temporarily close.

Police were called and officers forced to close the business amid concerns for Ms Pickett’s safety. As she drove away, accompanied by a police escort, the crowd “pelted” her car with stones and booed loudly, according to one witness.

And the shop was subject to further vandalism on Friday night when its windows were left smashed with a hole created at the bottom of the large window pane, with photos circulating on Twitter showing the damage.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers received a report of damage to a property in the Seaforth Road area of Muir of Ord, which is thought to have happened between 7.30pm on Friday, 9 September, and 10.30am on Saturday, 10 September, 2022.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances."

Ms Pickett's membership to the National Federation of Fish Friers was last week revoked in response to the original social media post.

In a statement, the NFFF said: "The NFFF has been made aware of social media posts made by one of our members that are in extremely bad taste and completely against all of the values our organisation and industry hold dear.

"We have discussed this as a board and have taken the decision to revoke the membership of this business owner and we will be writing to them and asking them to remove all association of the NFFF from her business, social media and websites."
