An award winning chip shop named one of the very best in Wales has shocked its loyal customers by announcing it is closing. Hooked@31 in Fishguard had been named one of the top ten chip shops in the UK and was also ranked among the top two in Wales, having been pitted up against 10,500 others as part of the National Fish & Chip Awards.
It was commonplace to see long queues form outside the chip shop, which stayed open during the coronavirus lockdown to provide home deliveries. It was known for its ice cream produced from Pembrokeshire county-sourced milk, which included vegan and dairy-free ice cream.
It had closed on December 23 for the Christmas break, with many fully expecting it would reopen afterwards, but in a statement on its Facebook page, the owners said it will remain closed, thanking customers for their support and explaining how it was the "right decision" for their family.

A message on its Facebook page read: "A message to you, our customers, our friends: As one door closes another door opens, Hooked@31’s doors are staying closed for now. Thank you to our loyal customers for supporting us on our journey, but for now our path is taking a new direction. We are very fortunate to be able to make this decision ourselves, it is the right decision at the right time for us, as a family.
"Whether you’ve supported us right from the start, joined us along the way, or only had the odd visit to us….thank you to each and every one of you. There’s been highs and believe me there’s been lows…..but we are proud of what we’ve achieved….UK TOP 10 fish and chip shop is top of the list. We are sorry we won’t get to have the New Year catch ups with you all, but for now Thank you, it has been our pleasure to serve you. Gethin, Charlette, Libby, Evie & Freya."
