Fish and chip shop forced to close over 'devastating' £36k energy bill

Two fish and chip restaurant owners have been left 'absolutely devastated' after they were forced to shut shop due to the rising cost of living crisis.

Matthew and Jo Hogg, the owners of The Station Masters House in Bingley, Bradford, closed their business on Sunday after they decided it was no longer viable.

The owners have now revealed their shocking annual electric bill - which has risen nearly quadrupled, report YorkshireLive.

With the bill increasing from £8,500 to around £36,000 - and other costs going up, such as fish, chicken, beer and soft drinks, the owners said they were left with no other choice but to close.

In a post on social media, the owners wrote: "It is with sadness and regret we have to announce The Station Masters will be closed for the foreseeable future."

The post added that the energy bills were too much to keep up with after soaring so much. It added: "Thank you guys for your continued support. You have given us great strength over the past year and a half and we are extremely privileged to have served Bingley. We are devastated, absolutely devastated.

"It's a shame to shut the doors but we will be taking great memories away from the place."

Customers have been left devastated and saddened by the news, calling the restaurant "fantastic". They added that the closure is a big loss to Bingley.

Restaurant manager Henry Solomon added that he would be moving to the couple's other business, the Brown Cow, a bar and restaurant in Bingley, along with two other staff members.

He said staff had wanted The Station Masters House to stay open after all the hard work they had put in but the business circumstances had led to its closure.
