The first whale of the season has become entangled in shark nets off the Gold Coast this morning.
Rescue crews, including the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), are preparing to help the animal stuck in shark nets in waters just off the tourist strip in Surfers Paradise.
A Sea World Rescue spokesperson said they received a number of calls about a whale entangled in nets at Surfers Paradise just before 7am.
The whale -- which is off Surfers Paradise Beach -- is the first confirmed whale entangled in shark nets on the Gold Coast this season.
According to Queensland Fisheries data, two humpbacks were entangled in equipment last year, down from four in 2019.
Earlier this month, Sea World freed a humpback whale from fishing gear off Coolangatta.
More to come.
