First US Moon lander since Apollo blasts off - Tech & Science Daily

Peregrine Mission One has blasted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida. If all goes to plan, the spacecraft will be the first US mission to land on the Moon since 1972 - and the first ever by a private company.

Astrobotic's robotic lander has been contracted by Nasa to carry five scientific instruments - including one developed in the UK by scientists from the Open University and the national space lab.

Peregrine is part of a number of spacecraft that will attempt to put themselves on the lunar surface in 2024 - there are currently eight different projects in the works, including some from Japan and China.

Ministers will meet to discuss the Post Office/Horizon software scandal after an ITV drama thrust the topic back into the spotlight.

The scandal saw more than 700 branch managers convicted of false accounting, theft and fraud based on faulty Horizon software. Some sub-postmasters wrongfully went to prison, many were financially ruined. Some have since died.

A public inquiry into the scandal is currently ongoing and the Metropolitan Police is investigating the Post Office over potential fraud offences arising from the prosecutions.

It’s been revealed that the Alaska Airlines plane, which was involved in a dramatic mid-air blowout, had warnings days before the incident occurred.

Investigators from the US National Transportation Safety Board say pilots reported ‘warning lights on three previous flights before Friday's incident’ and as a result, the airline prevented the jet from making long-haul flights over water.
