First supermarket to be built within major city development

A new supermarket is set to be built within a major Liverpool development in what will be a first for the multi-billion pound project.

Work is set to begin next week on a new Sainsbury’s local which will be housed below a multi-storey car park at Princes Dock in Liverpool City Centre. The supermarket will be the first retail chain supermarket offer of its kind within Liverpool Waters, an enormous £5bn development led by Peel L&P which plans to bring a range of residential, commercial, office and leisure space to the city’s north docks.

A decade into the project, Liverpool Waters' major developments include new offices at Princes Dock and apartments further north towards Waterloo Dock. The new Isle of Man Ferry terminal is also under construction with Everton new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock also currently under construction within the Liverpool Waters boundary.

Plans are also in the works to create a new green space within the central docks area. Public consultations are underway for the park with further infrastructure coming to the area in the summer with the completion of the new Sainsbury’s local.

According to Peel, the new supermarket will help support the growing businesses and residential community living around the dock. The 5,748 sq ft store will be located on William Jessop Way, beneath the multi storey car park and will include a free cash machine, in-store bakery and collection point for Argos orders.

The development was granted planning permission by Liverpool City Council in January and will be located in the northern end of the building. It will be situated by Bean Café and Holyrood Nursery, with both businesses remaining open.

Bean Café is set to undergo its own refit and will move into a neighbouring unit. This was previously used by The Store newsagent.

Liza Marco, Senior Asset Manager at Peel L&P’s Liverpool Waters, said: “We are delighted to welcome Sainsbury’s to Liverpool Waters. It will be a very welcome addition to the growing number of businesses now based at the Princes Dock neighbourhood.

“With increasing numbers of visitors, and further residential and commercial developments in the pipeline, this growing community will need access to a quality store selling a wide range of groceries, convenience foods and beverages.”
