A newly announced Orkney whisky distillery will be the first to open on the archipelago in 138 years.
Construction on the new six-figure Deerness Distillery, which already produces globally-recognised Orkney-inspired spirits such as Sea Glass Gin, will begin this spring. It currently operates as a self-built garden distillery run by husband and wife Stuart and Adelle Brown.
Once the new distillery opens, the family will begin production of their new whisky and increase bottlings of their existing gins, vodka and coffee liqueur. Among the highlights of the new development will be an "immersive" visitor centre experience showcasing the distilling process from nose-to-tail.
There will also be a new café and bar, with Stuart and Adelle "ready to invite visitors in with a warm family welcome".
In honour of the announcement, the family are offering up a limited number of 200 casks of its inaugural single malt. Once filled, the casks will contain Deerness' signature moderately peated style new make, promising a "balanced smoke profile that will delicately complement the liquid's unique character".
With a surge in private cask sales following the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a growing demand for first outturn casks among whisky enthusiasts and investors.
Co-Founder Stuart Brown commented: "We are thrilled to be commencing this exciting new chapter for Deerness Distillery and Orkney whisky.
"By offering the chance to invest in the future of Deerness Distillery, we're not just sharing our passion for Orkney whisky, we're inviting people to become part of our journey. We can't wait to welcome more people to our family-owned distillery and farm as we take the next step in our distilling adventure."
The limited edition casks will be available to purchase starting from 12pm on March 29. More information can be found on the Deerness Distillery website.
