First picture of young man killed in early morning crash on A77

A young man killed in a car crash after a vehicle came off the road has been named by police as Adam Smith from Stranraer.

The 19-year-old was the driver of a blue Ford Fiesta that crashed into a wall on the southern edge of the Glenapp Estate as it travelled along the A77 near the South Ayrshire town of Ballantrae, between Girvan and Cairnryan, at around 12.40am on May 14.

He was tragically pronounced dead at the scene by the emergency services following the collision.

Tributes have poured in for Adam who is believed to have been a farmer in Dumfries and Galloway.

One person said: "Taken too soon cousin"

A friend added: "Fly high Adam, you will be missed."

Another said: "RIP young man".

Police closed the road for 11 hours following the smash to carry out investigations. Images from the scene showed officers retrieving and bagging wreckage from the vehicle.

Motorists diverted along a 53-mile alternate route; the road re-opened at 11.40am.

Enquiries into the the crash are ongoing and police are appealing to any witnesses or those who may have dashcam footage of the incident to contact officers.

Sergeant Stewart Taylor from Irvine’s Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area and witnessed the crash or who may have information which can assist, and who has not already spoken to officers to get in touch.

“I would also appeal to anyone with dash-cam footage to contact us.”
