A man who died while in police custody has been named locally as Stephen ‘Spike’ Campbell.
The 50-year-old passed away on Tuesday, February 23, after being taken to Kirkcaldy Police Station in Fife.
It is understood that he suffered a medical episode while waiting to be questioned by officers over an alleged robbery.
His death is being probed by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner under direction from the Crown Office.
The Fife dad’s death is the third to happen while in police custody in Kirkcaldy over the last seven years.
Sheku Bayoh died in 2015 after being restrained by up to nine officers.
The 31-year-old’s death sparked an independent government inquiry which will examine the circumstances surrounding it, the subsequent police investigation and whether race played a factor.
In September 2020, Marc Hamilton, 36, was found dead in his cell by officers at the Kirkcaldy station.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police Scotland can confirm that a 50-year-old male has died while in custody at Kirkcaldy Police Station.
“The deceased's next of kin have been informed.
"The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner is undertaking a Crown directed investigation into the circumstances and we will fully assist the PIRC with its enquiries.”
A PIRC spokesperson said: "We are investigating the circumstances of the death of a 50-year-old man in police custody at Kirkcaldy Police Station on 22 February 2022.
"At the conclusion of our investigation a report will be sent to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service for consideration."
