First picture of 'one-of-a-kind' young dad at centre of Rochdale murder investigation

The victim at the centre of a murder investigation in Rochdale has been named by friends as Liam Richardson.

The 21-year-old was tragically found dead at a house on Industry Road in the early hours of Monday morning (October 3). Police were called to the scene after reports of a 'disturbance'.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody, with detectives granted an extra 36 hours to question him.

Mr Richardson has not yet been formally identified, Greater Manchester Police said.

A spokeswoman added: "The deceased is believed to be a young man named Liam Richardson, but this has not yet been formally confirmed."

And, a spokeswoman for Manchester North Coroners' Court said a file had been received for a man it is 'suspected may be Liam Richardson', and that the case was pending formal identification.

In light of the tragedy, Mr Richardson's friends have now paid tribute to him. They described the young dad as 'lovely and kind'.

One friend said: "He was a lovely, kind and generous person, really one-of-a-kind. He was so funny, yet infuriatingly annoying but that is why we loved him."

"He had become such a good and unique young man who cared for the ones he loved, he loved his son more than anything. Our pain and loss is indescribable", he added.

Another friend described Liam as a 'genuinely decent and nice lad'. In a statement issued earlier today, police said detectives had been granted an extension so they could quiz the suspect further.

Officers said they are 'not looking for any other suspects' in relation to the incident. A post-mortem has found that the victim died 'as a result of multiple injuries', police added.

A cordon remains in place on Industry Street as investigations continue. On Norton Road and Gale Street, where police were previously carrying out investigations, the police cordons have been removed.

Anyone with information is being urged to come forward. You can contact Greater Manchester Police via gmp.police.uk, 101 or anonymously via the independent charity, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
