First photo of Scots fisherman who died after trawler capsized off Norway

A Scots fisherman who tragically died after a boat tragedy off the coast of Norway has been named locally as Ronald McKinnon.

Tributes have been paid to Ronald after the fishing accident in the North Sea on Monday afternoon as he was described as a kind man who would 'do anything for you'.

It is understood Ronald was living in Thailand but is from Peterhead as other crew members involved in the incident are also thought to be from the Aberdeenshire town.

His death was described as a ''heart-wrenching tragedy" by fishing boss Jimmy Buchan, Aberdeen Live reports.

One person wrote on social media: "Absolutely devastated to hear of this.

"You wouldn't of met a nicer person who would do anything for you.

"My thoughts are with all his kids, his partner and of course his family back here."

We told yesterday how a man has died and seven crew members have been rescued after a Scottish trawler capsized off Norway.

The Peterhead-registered Njord got into difficulty in the North Sea yesterday afternoon.

A rescue helicopter airlifted three crew members to Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen after the vessel was located about 100 nautical miles west of Stavanger.

The north-east port community has been in mourning following the death which fishing boss Jimmy Buchan described as a 'heart wrenching' tragedy.

It has now emerged that water watchdogs the Marine Accidents Investigations Branch (MAIB) has launched a probe into the incident in a bid to find answers.

A note published today reads: "Capsize and foundering of a UK registered stern trawler in the North Sea, approximately 100 miles west of Stavanger in Norway, resulting in the death of one crew member.- Currently under investigation."

In another north-east accident at sea yesterday two men were been rescued by the Coastguard near Aberdeen after a Scottish trawler sank in the north sea.

A search operation was launched after the vessel was reportedly in distress near the harbour in the south of the city.

A spokesman for the JRCC revealed that the three rescued had inhaled diesel and one man has tragically been pronounced dead.

The local fishing community are mourning this tragedy as past fisherman from Peterhead, Jimmy Buchan lead the tributes to the man.

Mr Buchan, who is the chief executive of the Scottish Seafood Association, said: "This is such a heart-wrenching tragedy for our fishing community.

"Especially being a family man myself, my heart goes out to all of the families involved.

"I was forty years at sea and nothing can prepare you for that happening. This is still a dangerous job and your life can change in a flash

"Having been at sea all my life, my heart goes out to all who has been affected."

A spokesman for the foreign office said: "“We are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Norway.

"We are also supporting a British man who is hospitalised in Bergen. We remain in contact with the Norwegian authorities.”

Police Scotland said they couldn't comment as he had died outside of Scottish Waters.
