First Minister to give reading at memorial service for Winnie Ewing

DETAILS of a Winnie Ewing’s memorial service have been released, with the First Minister Humza Yousaf expected to give a reading alongside many other figures in Scottish politics.

The service for the titan of the independence movement – who passed away on June 21 at the age of 93 – will be held at 2pm on Saturday July 15 at Inverness Cathedral.

Two eulogies will be given: one by former first minister Alex Salmond and the other by former SNP MSP Alex Neil.

First Minister Humza Yousaf, Scottish Parliament Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone and Highland MSP Kate Forbes will all give readings at the ceremony.

Gaelic songs are set to be performed by Julie Foulis who will be accompanied by her husband Eamon Doorley. Winnie Ewing’s grand-daughter, Ciara, will also sing.

The service is set to be conducted by Most Reverend Mark Strange, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church and Bishop of the Diocese of Moray, Ross & Caithness, and the Very Reverend Sarah Murray, Provost of Inverness Cathedral.

The service will be livestreamed on Facebook, YouTube and Vimeo – with everyone welcome to attend.
