First look at William and Kate's romantic university meeting in new series of The Crown

The moment Prince William sees future wife Kate Middleton for the first time in an upcoming series of The Crown has been caught on camera.

Filming for the sixth season of the Netflix drama took place in Scotland today, with the actors playing the future King and Queen of England pictured filming the scene their characters meet for the first time.

Prince William and his wife Kate met for the first time while both were students at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where their initial friendship eventually blossomed into a romance.

The latest series of The Crown, based on real-life events connected to the British Royal Family, will see Prince William's student years take focus - with Ed McVey taking on the role of the future Head of State.

Newcomer Meg Bellamy plays the Duke of Cambridge's love interest Kate, after submitting a self-taped audition after a casting call The Crown put out on social media.

In the snaps of Ed and Meg filming in Scotland today, the two actors appeared to be shooting the moment the future King spots his beau while both out on respective jogs.

The pictures show Ed as Prince William looking back at brunette Kate as the future Mrs Windsor runs past the man she will one day go on to marry and share three children with.

As they announced their engagement in 2010, the real-life Prince William and Kate recalled how they actually found their way to one another at St. Andrews in the early 00s.

"William wasn't there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn't there from Freshers' Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other, but we did become very close friends from quite early on," Kate recalled.

It's been repeatedly claimed that Kate's stint on a catwalk for a student fashion show, wearing a sheer dress, caught Prince William's attention and saw their friendship turn into something more romantic.

"A switch had been flicked, he suddenly saw her in a different light, and I really believe that was the turning point in their relationship," Katie Nicholl, Vanity Fair's royal correspondent, said in a 2021 documentary about the pair.

It's not known how much of the early days of Prince William and Kate's relationship will feature on sixth season of The Crown, with the series also focusing on the death of Princess Diana and the aftermath of her tragic passing.

The upcoming series of the Netflix drama has already sparked controversy ahead of premiering, thanks to reports actress Elizabeth Debicki lies in a coffin when filming scenes following Diana's on-screen death for the show.

Although no official details about the sixth and final series of the drama have been confirmed, it's reported Dominic West's version of Prince Charles - now King Charles - will be distraught after seeing the body of his former wife.

"They actually made Elizabeth climb into a coffin and play dead as Diana. Viewers will see a French priest administering the last rites for Diana as she is pronounced deceased," one onlooker on set told The Sun.

"Prince Charles enters the room and is in floods of tears. In his hysteria he notices that Diana is missing an earring. It is all he can focus on as grief envelops him."

The episodes covering the aftermath of Diana's 1997 car crash in paris will also show a fictional version of the heartbreaking moment young Prince William and Prince Harry walked behind their mother's coffin.

For the public showings and her state funeral in September 1997, Princess Diana's coffin remained closed and was covered in a royal standard flag.
