First look at plans to build 12-storey tower block with roof terrace on Gateshead Quayside

Plans to build a huge 12-storey tower block on Gateshead Quayside have been unveiled.

ES Gateshead Ltd has applied to Gateshead Council for permission to construct the 162 new apartments beside the River Tyne off South Shore Road.

The proposed building could be up to 12 storeys high and have a roof terrace on the fifth floor which looks onto the river. It would include an area of sedum type planting, and other ornamental planting along with a seating area.

The development will also include a 'hub' for residents' amenities and parking spaces for bikes to encourage more sustainable modes of transport.

However, the proposals have been met with public opposition, with one resident raising concerns that the “bulk, height, mass and materials” used for the project could impact the views of the Tyne Gorge. They also raised issues regarding the residential amenity of neighbouring residents.

In response to this, a review conducted by council officers concluded: “The location, height and scale and orientation of windows within the new development relative to existing neighbouring units is not considered to raise any significant residential amenity issues.

“This is because any overlooking would be mutual and is something to be reasonably expected in an urban core location where high density development sits together.”

The council report into the plans also highlights the employment opportunities coming from the building.

As part of the borough’s planning obligations from December 2016, an employment plan, to take on apprentices for the length of the build, could be imposed on the developers.

Council officers have recommended the plans be given the green light ahead of a planning committee taking place on Wednesday morning (July 13).
