The first glimpse of plans for the new Porth transport hub in Rhondda Cynon Taf have been revealed after a planning application was submitted.
As part of the council’s town centre strategy to regenerate Porth, it is planning to create the transport hub which would link bus and rail services in the town.
Capita, who are the council’s consultants for the scheme, have now submitted an application for the development to the council’s planning department.
A new ticketing system would link all journeys across bus and rail once the local developments and the wider South Wales Metro are delivered in future years.
The development would also see the creation of electric vehicle charging points and enhance the local walking and cycling network.
The project has been funded from the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal and Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund through the Metro Plus programme.

So far, the Alec Jones Day Centre, Barclays bank, and the Porth Farm Surgery have all been demolished to make way for the new transport hub.
The wider Porth Town Centre Strategy, which was approved by cabinet at the start of 2019, also includes the development of Porth Plaza as a community hub, the redevelopment of the old Porth Junior School site and plans to increase the number of parking spaces in the town.
Together they will form part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s plans to capitalise on Porth’s status as the “Gateway to the Rhondda.”
