The River of Light festival opens to the public today (Friday, October 21) as Liverpool's waterfront is illuminated by beautiful artwork.
Last night the ECHO got a first look at this year's illuminations, which include colourful, interconnected archways and optical illusions. The free exhibition is self-guided with no need to book a ticket.
For 17 nights until Sunday, November 6, the exhibition will showcase artworks created by local, national and international artists in a walking trail spanning 2km. The light installations will come on at 5pm and be switched off at 9pm every evening. You can view a full map of the route here.

Last night, our ECHO photographer was invited along to preview the trail and he captured these beautiful images.
River of Light is designed to be a family friendly and inclusive event, with dogs welcome to walk the trail alongside their owners. It is advised that small children are accompanied by an adult at all times.
All of the artwork included in this year's trail follows the theme of Unexpected Twist - offering a nod to the World Gymnastics Championships, which will be taking place in the city at the same time. Some of the highlights to look out for include the interactive Light Looper exhibit, which is a multiplayer game where players can send particles of light around the artwork.
The Rainbow Accordion exhibit is part of the festival for the second time and consists of six giant colourful, interconnected archways. Another highlight is Affinity, an interactive light and sound installation inspired by the human brain. The artwork features 62 different colour combinations and 45 points of interactivity.
