First look at Ayr's new public riverside 'events space' that took seven years to plan

The first pictures of a project that has been seven years in the making have emerged online.

Fresh images of the Riverside Public Realm Space at the bottom end of Ayr High Street have been released.

Council chiefs have teased that the pavilion building and vibrant outdoor space will be open by spring.

Snaps have surfaced showing a sneak peek inside the new-look building which is set to host concerts, markets and events.

The building has floor to ceiling glass windows which offer views onto the River Ayr

An aerial shot has also been shared on the local authority's social media page South Ayrshire Council Live which shows the upcoming building from a distance.

Plans for the historic site were given the green light in summer 2021 after seven-years of debating.

The project was marred with controversy with the new community pavilion replacing a historic town house.

Town landmarks which once housed Woolworths and Savers were bulldozed as part of the move, with left heritage protectors furious.

A Conservation group, the Kyle and Carrick Civic Society, hit out plans to demolish the High Street icons arguing that the old buildings should have been turned into housing.

In 2020 Society President Michael Hitchon MBE said he was 'alarmed' stating the demolition of the treasured buildings was just "one too many."

Objectors at the time described the building as resembling a 'scout hut'.

But ex-council leader Peter Henderson defended the move saying the project will "open the town and the river up."

Now he insists that his previous SNP administration have succeeded in making proper use of the space.

Councillor Henderson: "I'm delighted to see things are starting to take shape and the project is nearly complete.

"The previous Labour and Conservatives administration before we were in power wanted to build office blocks and that was objected to.

"It will ultimately make that end of the town more tourist friendly. Once it is complete it will open up views onto the historical town hall."
