First headteacher of West Lothian's newest school unveiled

The new headteacher of West Lothian’s newest school has been unveiled.

Gerry Burns has been named as the first ever head for the new Sinclair Academy in Winchburgh.

He will be first leader of the new state-of-the-art facility, which is the third and final school built as part of the Winchburgh Schools Campus project, the council’s largest ever investment in education at more than £60 million.

The former principal teacher of Science, CDT and Computing at St Margaret’s Academy in Livingston is returning to West Lothian, after five years as depute head at St Mungo’s Academy in Glasgow.

He said: “It is a huge honour to be appointed as the first ever Headteacher of the superb new Sinclair Academy.

“Being able to set up a new school is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am excited to grow our community in partnership with staff, pupils, parents/carers and the people of Winchburgh. Our school’s patron, the Venerable Margaret Sinclair was known for her hard work and dedication to her life of service and faith.

“In consultation with our school community, we have defined our school values to be Aspiration, Integrity, Mercy and Service. These reflect our school’s mission to support our learners as confident learners ready for the world, courageous young people who are willing to accept challenges, committed to developing their talents and dedicated to being the best version of themselves.

“I look forward to working in partnership with our entire school community to ensure that we make this mission a reality.”

Executive councillor for education Andrew McGuire said: “It’s great to welcome Gerry Burns back to West Lothian to become Sinclair Academy’s first Headteacher.

“I’m confident he has all right skills, knowledge and experience to help establish the new school community and make a positive difference for Sinclair pupils.”
