First ever Finglas Junior Park Run to take place this weekend

Young people from the Finglas community will gather for a fun run this Sunday in Mellowes Park.

Dubs may be familiar with Park Runs that happen in various locations around the city, which mostly consist of 5km runs around the city's parks and are geared towards adults.

Although there are a few for children in the city, Stephen Keeler of Finglas decided that one needed to happen in his area. With a team of 11 volunteers to help facilitate the event, Finglas' first ever Junior Park Run takes place this weekend.

Stephen spoke to Dublin Live about why he decided to host the event for kids in the Finglas community.

He explained that the event is for young people aged 4 to 14. While regular park runs are 5km in length, this one will be 2km, which is exactly two laps of the park.

Stephen's own children are fans of the event and used to take part in the Junior Park Run in Albert College Park behind DCU in Glasnevin. It was when Stephen was on a walk in Mellowes Park that he realised there was an opportunity to have one closer to home.

He then got in touch with Park Run who are now sponsoring the event by sending out banners and merchandise for the day.

The event is free to attend and Stephen said that there are already between 20 and 30 kids registered, but he would love to get more involved.

Each child that is registered will receive a bar code that will be scanned once they cross the finish line, allowing them to access their running time.

He said: "It's something positive in the area. It's all flat and 2km in length. And it's all free."

He went on to explain that although soccer and Gaelic football were always hugely popular activities in the Finglas area, it's great to have something for kids who might not have an interest in those sports.

Junior Park Run will be held in Mellowes Park in Finglas every Sunday at 9.30am.
