First contestant leaves Great British Bake Off

Great British Bake Off contestant Will became the first person to be eliminated from the contest. The 45-year-old former charity director failed to impress the judges with his 'overbaked' showstopper.

Meanwhile Janusz became the first contestant to win the Star Baker gong. It came after the show launched with judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith joined presenters Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding for a Star Wars-inspired sketch.

Will failed to impress with his showstopper, a take on his 'first London family home', which Paul Hollywood said was 'overbaked' on each of its 11 tiers. Speaking after being eliminated, Will said: "Obviously I'm disappointed but I'm proud to have made it.

"There's a lovely bunch of people I've met and I've got an experience that I can definitely talk about and share. I'm proud of that."

Before entering the show the Londoner said he developed a passion for baking aged just two, when he would turn his mum's pastry trimmings into jam tarts.

Star baker Janusz celebrated his opening week victory by calling his boyfriend. Laughing on the phone, he said: "I just wanted to tell you, that I win star caker in bake week."

The 34-year-old Polish PA had previously said he wanted to bring a "cartoon-like, colourful and camp" style of baking to the show. He said he was inspired to bake by his mother, who would do so at weekends.

  • Great British Bake Off continues every Tuesday on Channel 4 from 8pm. Episodes are also available on All4
