First brushwork of the year: Kakizome calligraphy event held in Tokyo

(Credit: The Yomiuri Shimbun)

Participants write characters for a kakizome calligraphy event at the Nippon Budokan stadium in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, on Wednesday. Kakizome means calligraphy written at the start of the year. It was the first time in three years the competitive event has been held. The last two events were canceled because of preparations at the venue for the Tokyo Games and the novel coronavirus pandemic. About 1,270 people from all over the country took part, wearing masks and positioned a safe distance apart. Prize-winning works will be shown at an exhibition at the venue on Feb. 20.
