Fireworks set off in Nottingham city centre as display lights up skies

Dazzling fireworks lit of the skies of Nottingham city centre on Saturday evening (January 28). It's a busy evening in the city centre with many people out enjoying our brilliant city.

Pictures show fireworks being let off from around the Council House in Market Square just after 5pm. While it's not clear if the fireworks were to mark, Nottingham City Council tweeted a picture of the Council House lit up in red and said "We've lit up the Council House red tonight in celebration of Chinese New Year."

Hundreds of people gathered in Market Square earlier on Saturday as celebrations took place to mark the Chinese New Year. To celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, Cosmopolitan Arts presented 'From East to East - The Story of Chinese Migration to the East Midlands' in Old Market Square.

The traditional Chinese procession took place in the city, and was followed by a lion dance. There were also music and audio-visual displays at Old Market Square.

The family event taught people about the spring festival communities and their culture. An exhibition and Chinese workshop was also taking place on the day from 11am until 4pm at the Victoria Shopping Centre.

Cosmopolitan Arts have worked closely with the Chinese communities of Leicester, Nottingham, and Derby to conduct the first ever study into Chinese migration to the East Midlands. They were able to do this thanks to funding from Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund, which they said has allowed them to celebrate and share this research.
