Fireworks hurled as balaclava-clad hooded gang surround ambulance in Bristol

A gang of individuals that gathered around an ambulance after it had two fireworks launched at it in Bristol are being sought by police. At the time of the shocking incident the ambulance was parked up and had three crew members inside.

The 20 individuals who surrounded the emergency vehicle were dressed in hoods and balaclavas, say South Western Ambulance Service. The ambulance was parked on Birchwood Road, in the Broomhill area of the city, the incident took place on Sunday, November 6, at around 5.40pm.

South Western Ambulance Service has released a video recorded from within the ambulance, which initially shows the road quiet and then fireworks exploding right up against it.

After the initial fireworks had been thrown another firework was aimed at the ambulance. It hit the driver’s side window and bounced off the bonnet.

After the second firework, two cars then pulled up alongside the ambulance, with around 20 people in hoods and balaclavas on the other side of the road and behind the ambulance. Once the cars had been moved, the crew left the area and then reported the incident.

Mike Jones, SWASFT’s violence prevention and reduction lead, says: “It’s appalling that a small group of individuals would risk the lives of three colleagues who have dedicated their own lives to saving other people.

“We are incredibly lucky that one of the fireworks did not cause the oxygen tanks in the ambulance to explode, which would have been catastrophic.

“I would encourage anyone who has any knowledge of this incident or knows who was responsible to contact the police or Crimestoppers.

“Unacceptable behaviour towards our people will not be tolerated and we will take whatever action is necessary to protect them from harm.”

Avon and Somerset Police are encouraging those with any information about this incident, to contact them by dialling 101 and quoting log 763 of Sunday 6 November. Or, if you wish to remain anonymous, then call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
