Firefighters tackle dramatic car blaze in Cowgate

This is the moment firefighters tackled a dramatic car blaze on a busy Newcastle road.

Crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called to Ponteland Road in Cowgate at just after 8pm on Friday. It was reported that a car was on fire, close to the Cowgate roundabout.

It took firefighters around 20 minutes to extinguish the flames, as a small crowd of onlookers gathered to watch the drama. No one was hurt.

A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: “On Friday evening a crew from West Denton Community Fire Station attended an incident near to the Cowgate Roundabout in Newcastle, where there were reports of a vehicle fire.

“Our Fire Control received an emergency call at 8:03pm and the appliance was quickly on the scene within five minutes to tend to the fire.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the private vehicle blaze with the crew leaving the location at 8.30pm after the fire was successfully extinguished.”

One passer-by said they believed the car was a delivery vehicle.
