Firefighters spark London mass evacuation after gas main rupture as 1,300 forced to flee

More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from central London after a gas main ruptured.

The London Fire Brigade was called to the City of London during rush hour after a 24-inch main ruptured.

At least 1,300 people have been evacuated from the area, and it is unclear when they will be able to return.

The London Fire Brigade tweeted: "Around 1,300 people have been evacuated due to the 24-inch gas main that has ruptured on Seething Lane junction of Crutched Friars.

"Fenchurch Street station is not affected. Please avoid the area if possible."

Its earlier tweet read: "Firefighters are attending a ruptured gas main on Seething Lane at the junction of Crutched Fryers Lane in the City of London. Around 150 people have been evacuated from commercial premises and offices. Please avoid the area if possible."

The Mirror contacted the London Fire Brigade for a comment.

It comes a few days after a huge fire was filmed ripping through a Latin American restaurant in London with diners screaming as they rushed to escape.

Police and fire crews were also pictured rushing to the MNKY HSE restaurant on Dover Street in Mayfair on Friday night.

A reveller reportedly said that the fire spread quickly, taking hold “within seven seconds” and that there was immediate shock before screams as people tried to leave the building.

Social media footage appeared to show fire ripping through a room with people hurriedly trying to escape and some still holding their drinks.

A video showed some people having to duck under a fire to get to a door with decoration on the ceiling ablaze.

Others were heard screaming "go" as they head out and a person can be seen falling to the ground.

The trendy restaurant is popular with celebrities including those from Love Island with some dining there in August after a reunion episode.

London Fire Brigade said they were called out at 9.40pm with a blaze in the basement of the building.

Five fire engines and 35 firefighters arrived at the restaurant but the fire had already been put out, and thermal imaging was used to check everything was in order.

Two people were treated for injuries by ambulance staff.
