Firefighters scrambled to car on fire at side of Wigan canal

Emergency services were called to a road in Wigan following reports of a car on fire.

Fire crews were dispatched to Warrington Road in Leigh, near Butts Bridge, at around 2.30pm this afternoon (May 4).

Upon arriving at the scene, a black Audi vehicle was seen on fire by the side of the canal.

Fire crews worked to quickly extinguish the fire, with a large police presence also reported at the scene.

One fire engine from Leigh was in attendance for approximately 15 minutes. Greater Manchester Police said it was investigating to determine the cause of the fire, and there were no injuries reported.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At 2.30pm on Thursday 4 May, firefighters were called out to reports of a car on fire on an unadopted road near Warrington Road, Leigh.

“One fire engine from Leigh attended the scene where a black Audi was on fire at the side of the canal. Crews used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for approximately 15 minutes.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called to an incident on Butts Bridge in Leigh at 14.34 hours today, Thursday 4 May 2023, to reports of a car being on fire. Colleagues from GMFRS were called to the scene.

"There was no-one present in the car and no-one was injured. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire."
