Firefighters rush to tackle blaze at derelict former Crumpsall pub

Firefighters rushed to tackle a blaze at a former Crumpsall pub on Wednesday evening (April 27). The fire broke out on the second floor of the now derelict building shortly after 8pm.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the second floor and escaping from the now boarded up windows of the New White Lion, which was being run as a bed and breakfast when it suddenly closed in 2010. Numerous fire engines attended the blaze on Old Market Street and used hose reels to dampen the flames.

Traffic began to slowly build at the junction with Middleton Old Road. Three fire engines attended the scene - it is not yet known how the fire started, but Greater Manchester Police have been approached for further information.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) spokesperson said: “At 8:17pm on Wednesday 27 April three fire engines from Broughton, Gorton and Whitefield fire stations responded to a fire on Old Market Street, Manchester.

“The fire involved the second floor of a derelict building. Firefighters are currently in attendance and are using two hose reels and breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.”
