Firefighters rush to M62 after car bursts into flames

Firefighters rushed to a section of the M62 near to Rochdale this afternoon after a car caught on fire.

Crews from Greater Manchester Fire Service were called to the M62 Eastbound, between junctions 18 to 19 for Heywood, at around 2.20pm on Monday (March 21) following reports of a vehicle on fire on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

Fire engines from Blackley, Heywood and Bury were dispatched to the scene, near to the Birch service station slip road. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the fire.

The section of the road remained closed while firefighters responded. Crews were in attendance for around an hour and no injuries were reported.

In a statement, a spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At approximately 2.20pm on Monday, 21st March, firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle fire on the M62 Eastbound, between junctions 18 to 19.

“Fire engines from Blackley, Heywood and Bury quickly attended the scene. The fire involved a car on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for around an hour.”
