Firefighters hammer through roof as fire rips through house

Firefighters hammered through a roof to tackle a fire at a house.

Crews were called to the blaze on Delamore Street in Kirkdale at around 11.35am and were at the scene by 11.43am. Four fire engines rushed to the scene and found a two-storey mid terrace with both ground and first floor on fire.

When the ECHO attended the scene, firefighters were using an aerial to access the roof and used hammer to remove tiles "to expose and attack the fire in the roof space." Smoke was also seen pouring from the roof and drones were also used to assess the damage.

Residents in the area said one of the houses impacted by the blaze was empty but work had not "long started on it", including a new roof. A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said everyone was accounted for in the property and adjoining houses.

People living nearby were told to keep doors and windows closed and if people who had a pre-existing medical condition, were told to keep medicines close. Delamore Street in closed both directions while the fire service deal with a house fire. The closure is in place between between Goodall Street and A5038 Selwyn Street.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "Fire crews have been called to a house fire in Delamore Street, Kirkdale, this morning. Crews were alerted at 11.35am and on scene at 11.43am.

"Four fire engines and an aerial appliance are in attendance. Crews arrived to find a two-storey mid terrace with both ground and first floor well involved in fire. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have entered the property to suppress the fire and search for occupants.

"A further two firefighters have entered the property next door to check for fire spread in the roof space. The incident is ongoing, please avoid the area.

"After six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have previously entered the property where the main seat of fire is located and properties either side to prevent fire spread, roof tiles are being removed via the aerial appliance to expose and attack the fire in the roof space.

"All persons are accounted for in the property and adjoining properties. The use of breathing apparatus has now temporarily ceased as roof tiles continue to be removed to gain access.

Residents nearby should keep doors and windows closed and if you suffer from a pre-existing medical condition, keep medicines close. If any ill effects are experienced, please dial NHS 111 for advice. Please avoid the area if possible."
