Six firefighters from stations at Lambton and Newcastle have earned Commendations for Meritorious Service from Fire and Rescue NSW for their role in the dramatic rescue of a man who was knocked from Nobbys breakwall last year.
The Hunter firefighters were among 44 from across NSW who were recognised this week to mark St Florian's Day - International Day of Firefighters.
Emergency crews were called to the popular walking track about 2.30pm on May 31, after reports a large wave had knocked a man onto rocks below - he was then washed into the water.
Firefighters retrieved the man, who was aged in his 60s and visiting from Brisbane, and he was taken to John Hunter Hospital with a collapsed lung, broken ribs, suspected back injuries, cuts and abrasions.
Six firefighters involved in the rescue were this week acknowledged for their "courage and professionalism", Fire and Rescue NSW said, while a passer-by and two responding lifeguards were given Commissioner's Commendation Certificates and letters of appreciation.
"St Florian's Day allows FRNSW to honour the professionalism, service and courage of our firefighters with specific awards," Commissioner Paul Baxter said.
"The awards each year give FRNSW, on behalf of the community, a chance to say 'thank you' to those in our ranks who have gone above and beyond to protect the irreplaceable."
