Firefighters battle house fire at terraced house in Cardiff

Firefighters have been battling a fire which has broken out at a house in Cardiff. The blaze started on Friday afternoon a property in Donald Street, in the Roath area of the city.

Crews were called to the scene shortly after 2pm on Friday. Pictures from the scene show smoke billowing the property and across the terraced street, while another picture shows a badly fire-damaged mattress which has been brought out of the property.

The fire service said that all persons were accounted for and it’s understood that nobody sustained injuries as a result of the blaze. Two fire crews from Cardiff Central station have been at the scene. Although the fire has been extinguished, one crew remains at the scene. The landlord of the nearby Albany pub said: "I just saw a lot smoke, saw fire engines pass. Smoke first coming out the chimney, bubbling out of the window. Didn’t know what was going on at first. Firemen went in, put it out and brought out the heater and mattress." Rob Clarke of Sherlocks Garage, which is just around the corner from Donald Street, said: “I saw two fire engines pass round the corner, I thought it was a chimney fire but we’ve heard it’s an electrical fire. I saw a bit of smoke come out of the front window, and there’s damage to one room we’ve heard.”

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At approximately 2.08pm on Friday, January 6, we received reports of a domestic fire on Donald Street in Roath, Cardiff. A crew from Cardiff Central Station is currently in attendance. All persons are accounted for and crews are checking for smoke spread in neighbouring properties.” The fire service added that, as of 3.30pm, the incident was still “ongoing”. A spokesman for South Wales Police confirmed that they were not called to the incident.
