A large fire is still being tackled by firefighters after it broke out in Ely, Cardiff. The blaze has been raging across 100 tonnes of timber at a wood yard off Birdies Lane and Mill Road, according to a South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman.
A large number of firefighters were at the scene this morning continuing to deal with the incident, and watering down smouldering ruins.
A fire service spokeswoman said last night (May 24): "We were called at 7.30pm and attended with four fire engines and two water bowsers. We're using water bowsers to supply water from the River Ely to fight the fire and a 45-inch jet. There are no other hazards and no casualties. We expect to be in attendance for some time but it is under control."
Some 40 square metres of timber were in flames at the yard, which is near Herbert Thompson Primary School and some stables. The fire service spokeswoman said it was "far too early" to say whether the fire was started deliberately. She advised locals to keep their windows and doors closed given the "large amount of smoke".
This morning there were no longer any flames visible, but firefighters were spraying water on the timbers still smoking after the intense blaze.
Images indicate large amounts of water have been used to tackle the flames, while they also show blackened, charred wood and other items and some very tired looking firefighters.
The fire comes just two days after a riot started in Ely following a fatal crash, but there are not currently any reports of a crowd near the yard. Passer-by Ben Taylor said a few people were gathered near the site while the wood was burning and the fire service had since moved them on.
