A firefighter has been suspended from the Tasmanian Fire Service after allegedly being found with child abuse material.

The 41-year-old from southern Tasmania has been immediately suspended from duty pending the outcome of the court case, the fire service said on Wednesday.

The man has been charged with possessing or controlling child abuse material obtained using a carriage service.

He was arrested and charged following an investigation by the Tasmanian Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team, comprised of Tasmania Police and the Australian Federal Police.

"This is distressing news, and wellbeing services are being made available to TFS staff and volunteers as required," a fire service spokesman said.

He will reappear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on August 27.
