Firefighter dies at fire station on Boxing Day after working there for over 35 years

A "popular and dedicated" firefighter died on Boxing Day at the fire station he'd served at for more than 35 years

Carl Mills, 58, passed away on Monday morning at Wroxham Fire Station in Norfolk.

He'd served at the station since joining the fire service in April 1984 and had been a watch manager for many years.

Mr Mill's death was announced on Facebook by the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, who described him as a "colleague and friend", reports Norfolk Live.

The post said: "Carl was a popular and dedicated firefighter and loved serving the people of Norfolk and his local community.

"Over his more than 35 years of service, he responded to hundreds of calls including fires, water rescues and road traffic incidents.

"Alongside his on-call role, he served as a whole-time firefighter for the fire service at RAF Mildenhall."

Ceri Sumner, Director of Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, said the thoughts of everyone in the fire service were with Carl’s family, friends and colleagues, and added: "Carl was a dedicated firefighter, with more than three decades of service to the county, and he will be remembered fondly for his commitment and professionalism, particularly in his role as watch manager at Wroxham.”

Ms Sumner thanked passers-by and members of the emergency services who tried to help Mr Mills on Boxing Day.

"Carl leaves a wife, daughter, son, his parents and elder brother," she said. "He was loved by all who knew him. Carl’s family has asked for privacy at this very difficult time."

Flags at all fire stations in Norfolk are being lowered as a mark of respect for Mr Mills.
