Fire was 'getting big' as crews were called to blaze near Sneinton homes

A statement has been issued after a fire engine was called to a grass fire near a Nottingham residential area. A fire crew was spotted arriving at Edale Road, Sneinton, at around 7.20pm to the scene of a grass fire.

Several calls were made to the emergency service by concerned neighbours, with a 500 sq m area affected by the fire. There had been a more serious 20,000 sq m fire in a similar area on Wednesday, July 20.

The fire is now being dealt with by one fire engine from the London Road station, but a nearby resident said it looked serious before their arrival. Abiola Ollawoyin, 51, lives on Edale road and said: “It was getting big before the fire service crew arrived. I heard the sound from inside the house. I rushed out and I was running down to move close. Then I saw two ladies with children who told me that they called 999.

“Before I got to the ladies, I saw the fire service driving up the road. They parked to bring out the hose, I saw the fire burning and it looked like it was closer than the other time.”

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We have just got one appliance there at the moment and they've not requested any further resources so it should be under control.

"We had quite a few calls to it just because of the location with it backing on to residential housing. We've just got one appliance from London Road there and they are dealing with it. It's about 500 square metres but we just got one fire engine there."
