Fire that killed Paisley mum "not believed to be suspicious" say cops

Police today said a fire which tore through a block of flats and killed a mum is not believed to be suspicious.

Residents were evacuated from the eight-in-a-block properties, on Belmont Road in Paisley’s Gallowhill area, after the blaze took hold on Thursday, April 13, with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Flames could be seen spreading across the roofs with six appliances from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service racing to deal with the inferno.

Tragically, 38-year-old Claire McFadyen was prounounced dead at the scene. She had been home alone when the fire started around 10.30pm.

The emergency services remained at the scene the next day with fire crews ensuring the flames had been put out and the building was safe.

Floral tributes were left nearby as the big-hearted members of the community embarked on a fundraising bid to support those affected by what had happened.

A JustGiving page set up by Claire’s childhood friend, Sheree Carr, raised over £2,770 in donations with the money set to go towards funeral costs.

“She was kind, loving and would give her last to anyone,” Sheree wrote. “She was a mother, daughter, sister, auntie and friend.”

In an update, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.45pm on Thursday, April 13, police were called to reports of a fire at a property on Belmont Road, Paisley.

“A 38-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing, however, it is not believed to be suspicious.”
