People planning on hiking at the Natural Bridge State Resort Park in Powell County over the next few days should hike elsewhere. Nearly 50 federal, state and local firefighters are battling a blaze there first reported last Thursday. Kessley Baker is a wildfire mitigation specialist for the state Division of Forestry.
“The sky lift is shut down and all of the trails on the park are shut down currently. This is just as a precaution. Right now there's no structures in danger or anything like that.”
Baker said she doesn’t know how long the trails and skylift will be closed.
“Right now, it's right about five acres. We've got multiple engines, we do have a helicopter or aerial resources. They are not dropping water. But they are keeping an eye on things from the sky.”
Baker said no structures are in jeopardy, nobody’s been evacuated and the state resort park lodge is unaffected. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
