Authorities are currently searching for a man who allegedly started a fire at independent Sen. Bernie Sanders' office in Vermont on Friday. The incident occurred at the third-floor office, where the suspect reportedly entered the vestibule and sprayed an accelerant on the entrance door before igniting it and fleeing the scene.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries as a result of the fire. However, the door of the office sustained damage, and the sprinkler system caused water damage to the surrounding areas. The quick response of first responders, who arrived at the scene around 10:45 a.m. local time, helped contain the fire and prevent further harm.
The Burlington Police Department has released photos of the suspect and is seeking the public's assistance in identifying him. While the motive behind the incident remains unknown, the fire marshal's office has classified the fire as incendiary in nature.
Following the incident, the Vermont State Police and the Burlington Police Department have taken over the investigation. Additionally, the US Capitol Police and the Senate Sergeant at Arms are collaborating with local authorities to ensure the safety and security of the office and its occupants.
In a statement, Sanders' Vermont state director expressed relief that no staff members or individuals in the building were harmed during the incident. The office is now working closely with law enforcement to gather more information and ensure the safety of its premises moving forward.
