Fire service statement after rescue crews seen near River Trent in Nottingham

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed the reason why fire engines were spotted at the River Trent in Nottingham.

Two engines were spotted by the river at Wilford Toll Bridge, in West Bridgford, on Wednesday morning (February 23).

The fire engines were parked on the road whilst crew members travelled along the river in dinghy boats.

Some also swathed through parts the water.

The fire service told Nottinghamshire Live that their presence was due to a training exercise.

It involved two fire engines from Highfields Fire Station, specialising in water rescue.

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews were at the River Trent due to a training exercise.

"Two crews from Highfields were there for training. They are the fire service's specialist water rescue unit."
