Fire service battled blaze after abandoned building went on fire

Scores of fire service members had to combat a Lanarkshire blaze at the weekend.

An abandoned building just off Rutherglen Main Street went on fire on Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses reported the entire roof of the building was destroyed as a result.

The incident also left some locals without water for a period of time, due to the amount used in dealing with the flames.

Four fire engines and an aerial appliance were sent to the scene to attempt to deal with the blaze, which took place just behind Iceland and the Royal of Bank of Scotland outlets.

There were no casualties.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers are assisting Scottish Fire and Rescue Service following reports of a fire in Main Street, Rutherglen which was reported to police at 12.15pm today (Saturday, 31 December, 2022).

"Residents are asked to keep windows and doors closed.

"Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area."

Following the incident some residents in the area reported having no water available to them.

Scottish Water stated: "Due to large volumes of water being used our network will take some time to recover over the next couple of days.

"While the supply is being restored please be aware that you may experience no water supply, low/intermittent pressure or discoloured water."

The building was previously home to the Reformer and to a photography studio, but has been abandoned for a number of years.

The incident comes several weeks after a huge blaze took place on King Street in Rutherglen.
