Fire service battle 'malicious' fire after 5G mast torched in Gateshead

Emergency services battled a suspected malicious fire at a 5G mobile phone mast in Gateshead on Friday night.

Three fire crews extinguished the blaze in the Leam Lane area which was called in at around 9.30pm.

Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident.

Northumbria Police has confirmed that they have launched an investigation with the fire service to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm on the evening of Friday 14th January that three TWFRS crews were dispatched by our Fire Control Team to a suspected malicious fire on Leam Lane in Gateshead. The first appliance was on the scene at 9.25pm.

“The fire that greeted firefighters was a 5G mobile phone mast that was well alight when the crews first arrived.

“The three crews were from Gateshead, Hebburn and Marley Park Community Fire Stations.

“We requested the services of an engineer and for assistance from Northumbria Police to help with traffic management. No persons were involved with the incident.

“Our crews left the scene at 10.08pm.”

A Northumbria Police spokesperson added: “At about 9.30pm on Friday (January 14) we received a report of a mast fire on Leam Lane in Gateshead.

“Emergency services attended and extinguished the blaze. Nobody was injured.

“Enquiries are ongoing with the fire service to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the fire.”
