An eyewitness who arrived at the scene shortly after the blaze broke out said: "There is a ton of emergency service vehicles here. There are three fire engines, three ambulances and at least two police cars.
"Police have set up a cordon and it looks like residents can't get back into the building yet. There are multiple people inside the cordon standing outside local businesses, I certainly can’t see any smoke or sign of fire so that suggests it is under control."
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a report of a fire within a stairwell on Gorgie road at 08.52. Crews remain in attendance. Four appliances and one aerial unit remain at the scene."
The Scottish Ambulance Service and Police Scotland were approached for comment.
