Fire engines rush to station as smoke triggers fire alarm

Trains were not stopping at Moorfields Train Station after the fire service was called following the smell of smoke.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) rushed to the city centre train station, on Old Hall Street and Moorfields, at 1.46pm on Monday, July 25 after smoke was smelt inside. Once three fire engines arrived at the scene just five minutes later, firefighters worked with Merseyrail staff and an engineer to find the source of the smell.

While emergency services worked, all trains planning to stop at Moorfields had to pass through without stopping and commuters were not allowed to enter the station.

After an investigation, it was found the alarm activated due to an overheating transformer in the plant room on the Wirral Line. The transformer was isolated and the scene was handed back to Merseyrail.

Greg Suligowski, Head of Customer Services at Merseyrail: "Due to an activation of the fire alarm at Moorfields, services were temporarily not stopping at this station. Following attendance from the fire brigade and engineers on site, which is routine in such circumstances, the station has now fully reopened and with trains stopping at it."

A spokesperson from MFRS said: "Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called to Moorfields Railway Station on Monday 25th July following a fire alarm activation and a reported smell of smoke. Crews were alerted at 1.46pm and on scene at 1.51pm. Three fire engines attended.

"Firefighters liaised with on-site staff and an engineer form Merseyrail. Following investigation, it has been determined the alarm actuated due to an overheating transformed in the plant room on the Wirral line.

"The transformer has been isolated and the scene has been handed over to Merseyrail. Fire crews are expected to leave the scene shortly."

Once the station reopened, a number of trains were delayed.
