Fire crews rushed to a blaze at a recycling centre on Sunday afternoon after a 'large quantity of recycled paper and cardboard' went up in flames. The fire broke out in a warehouse on the Recycle for Greater Manchester (R4GM) site on Every Street, in Bury, at around midday (June 19).
Crews attended, with multiple hose retrieval units to dampen the flames, with all those living nearby urged to close their windows as thick smoke clouded over the area. It took the fire brigade multiple hours to tackle the fire, with the recycling centre closed for the remainder of the day.
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed that they received reports of the fire involving a 'large quantity of recycled paper and cardboard in a warehouse'. It is not known at this time how the materials caught fire, but residents continued to be urged to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 12:20pm this afternoon (Sunday 19 June) we received a report of a fire on Every Street, Bury, involving a large quantity of recycled paper and cardboard in a warehouse.
"Four fire engines were quickly mobilised and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire in sectors using jets, hose reels and a ground monitor. Crews are now damping down at the scene, and are working alongside on-site staff to ensure the safety of the area. We ask that residents continue to avoid the incident while firefighters carry out their work.”
Shortly before 3pm, the fire services tweeted that crews were on the scene which was 'generating a sizeable plume of smoke'. Following the fire being dampened, at around 5pm, they confirmed that residents nearby no longer had to keep windows closed. The fire service confirmed police were not in attendance.
