Fire crews descended on a North East hospital during the night after a 'loud bang' was heard with smoke coming from a building.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene in North Shields on Monday after 11pm (June 13) following reports from concerned members of the public. Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene where the building was soon assessed.
A number of eyewitnesses told ChronicleLive they had heard an "explosion" at the Rake Lane hospital. However, it was discovered that the loud bang and smoke had come from a ruptured steam pipe behind an out building.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "At 11:05pm on Monday 13th June, our fire control received calls about a loud bang and smoke coming from a building at North Tyneside District Hospital. Our two appliances, one from Tynemouth and one from Wallsend, were on scene in a matter of minutes to assess the situation.
"Upon arrival, our crews determined the loud bang and smoke had come from a ruptured steam pipe behind an out building. There was no intervention required from our crews and it was left in the hands of hospital staff."
"Fire crews left the scene at 12:08am."
Nobody was injured in the incident and the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust confirmed there has been no impact on patients or staff.
A spokesman for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust added: "We had an issue with a steam pipe on one of our boilers. There was or is no impact on patients or staff and the fire brigade responded last night and issue was resolved quickly."
