Fire crews fight huge blaze at Scots British Legion branch for over 10 hours

Firefighters tackled a huge blaze at a British Legion building in the Borders for over 10 hours .

Emergency services were called to the scene of the huge fire on Park Street, Galashiels, at 11.32am on Monday March 21.

Bright flames could be seen bursting out the upper windows of the building, sending black smoke billowing into the sky.

In an update from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service this morning, they told the Record that firefighters finally left the scene at 9.35pm.

The Royal British Legion Galashiels Branch will be closed until further notice.

A post on Facebook said: "Sorry folks, as you will all know there was a large fire in the office today and we regret to say that we will be closed till further notice."

Four fire engines and a height appliance attended the huge blaze that has visibly left the premises gutted.

Police were also in attendance at the scene, managing traffic while SFRS colleagues tackled the flames.

Despite the severity of the fire, there were no causalities reported.

The fire is believed not to be suspicious.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.32am on Monday, March 21, to reports of a fire within a building in Park Street, Galashiels.

“Operations control immediately mobilised four fire engines and a height appliance to the location and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are extinguishing the fire.

“There are no reports of casualties.

“Crews will remain at the scene until the area is made safe.”
